The moors

Now we arrive at Buckland Abbey. Note the original roof (pointy triangle above the top window). This was added on long before Sir Francis Drake’s purchase of the home. Buckland was originally a Cistercian Abbey from the late 1200s. It became a home circa 1540, and the residence of the Grenville family. Sir Richard Grenville was a noted Elizabethan mariner. Drake purchased Buckland Abbey from him after sailing around the world, and being Knighted by Queen Elizabeth in 1580. ( The Queen’s Pirate )

Here we find Jim standing under Sir Francis Drake’s coat of arms at Buckland Abbey.

Here is a close-up of Drake’s coat of arms: “Waves and Stars.” To the left, the open hand indicates a baronetcy; to the right, the helmet of an esquire.

Now we enter a Norman Church in Tiverton, England, that was built shortly after the events retold in “Wulf the Saxon.” ( Wulf the Saxon )

Dickens Bench

Although Charles Dickens was English, his legions of fans are world wide. Here he is remembered in a bench outside the library in Portland, OR. (A Tale of Two Cities; A Christmas Carol and Other Favorites)
